Ambassador Kira Azucena calls on Mayor Wendy Schollum of Hastings
Hastings - Ambassador Kira Azucena paid a courtesy call on Mayor Wendy Schollum of Hastings on 18 August 2026, ahead of the opening of the Filipiñana Corner at Hastings Library.

Ambassador Azucena expressed her appreciation to Mayor Schollum and the Hastings District Council for their support in establishing the Filipiñana Corner at Hastings Library. The initiative is part of the Philippine Embassy’s efforts to promote greater understanding and appreciation of Philippine culture, history, literature, and heritage among Filipino and non-Filipino communities in New Zealand.
During the meeting, Ambassador Azucena and Mayor Schollum also discussed the valuable contribution of the Filipino community to Hastings and the wider Hawke’s Bay region. Mayor Schollum highlighted the community’s active participation in the region and its contributions to the local economy, workforce, and community life.
Ambassador Azucena underscored the Embassy’s commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties between the Philippines and New Zealand, including through initiatives that celebrate the Filipino community and create opportunities for greater cultural exchange. END
