Ambassador Kira Azucena calls on Mayor Fauono Ken Laban of Lower Hutt City

Wellington – Ambassador Kira Azucena paid a courtesy call on Mayor Fauono Ken Laban on 10 June 2026 at the Lower Hutt City Council.

During the meeting, Ambassador Azucena expressed her appreciation to Mayor Laban for graciously accepting the Philippine Embassy’s invitation to attend the flag-raising ceremony commemorating the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, which will be held at the Lower Hutt City Council. The event marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first time that a Philippine Independence Day flag-raising ceremony will take place outside the Embassy premises and that the Philippine flag will be raised at the Lower Hutt City Council.

Ambassador Azucena also highlighted the longstanding friendship between the Philippines and New Zealand as the two countries celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year. She underscored the important role of the Filipino community in further strengthening bilateral ties, noting the continued growth and positive contributions of Filipinos throughout New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Mayor Laban expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to host the flag-raising ceremony in Lower Hutt, noting that it will be the first time the Philippine flag will be raised at the Lower Hutt City Council. He shared his hope that the occasion would become an annual tradition, reflecting the strong and growing ties between the Filipino community and the city.

Mayor Laban also acknowledged the valuable contributions of Filipinos to New Zealand, particularly in the healthcare sector. He highlighted the positive impact that Filipino migrants have made in Lower Hutt and across the country through their hard work, dedication, and community spirit. Looking ahead, Mayor Laban expressed his aspiration to see greater Filipino representation in local leadership, even envisioning a future where a Filipino serves as Mayor of Lower Hutt.
