Ambassador Kira Azucena, Filipino Scholars and Educators welcomed at AUT Marae for a Day of Cultural Connection and Reflection
Ambassador Kira Azucena, alongside Filipino scholars, researchers, teachers, and learners, takes part in the powhiri, a traditional Māori welcome ceremony at AUT Marae on 30 May 2026.

The AUT Marae, a sacred meeting ground for Māori communities, serves as a place for cultural exchange, connection, and the preservation of traditions, playing a central role in Māori heritage. The meaningful event brought together participants to celebrate intercultural collaboration and the first anniversary of the Philippines Studies Network Aotearoa New Zealand.
Cultural practitioners and participants engage in interactive workshops showcasing traditional knowledge and skills from both Māori and Filipino communities. Scholars and researchers explore themes of indigenous philosophies, cultural heritage, and shared values across Filipino and Māori traditions.
The whole-day programme at AUT Marae highlighted the power of cultural exchange in strengthening connections between Māori and Filipino communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to #AUTuni Marae for this rare and special opportunity. A sincere thank you as well to our tangata whenua hosts—Matua Taituwha, Whaea Andrea, Francis, and Elbertha—for their generosity and manaakitanga.
