Joseph "Joey" Champness was born in New Zealand to an Australian father and a Filipino mother, making him eligible to represent New Zealand, Australia and Philippines at international level. He has represented Australia at youth level football, and was a member of the Young Socceroos team in the 2016 AFC U-19 Championship in Bahrain. On 25 June 2021, he was selected to join the New Zealand football squad competing in the Olympics.
